DATCHWORTH TENNIS CLUB
A brief summary to keep you up to date with what has been happening.
IN OCTOBER THE MACMILLAN’S COFFEE MORNING raised £562, it was well attended, about 60 people. Many thanks to those who baked cakes, provided raffle prizes and to those who gave their invaluable support helping out on the day serving out numerous cups of tea, coffee and cakes whilst also contending with the washing up! The sun shone on us, people were able to sit outside and enjoy our Village Green.
IN NOVEMBER THE QUIZ NIGHT raised £431 for the Tennis Club, all very much needed as every year we have to have £3,100 to put in our “sinking fund” this is used for annual maintenance on the courts and to build up a reserve for the resurfacing of the courts in time to come. And of course most important we need funds in order to continue subsidising the coaching for Juniors in the school holidays; providing balls, racquets and equipment when needed.
DECEMBER: We went to The White Horse at Burnham Green for our annual Christmas Dinner. The evening was enjoyed by all.

? For our Winter League Matches for 2014/15 we have once again entered the East Herts MXD League and Herts LTA Mens Vets Over 55’s League.
?There are 5 MXD matches to be played : 3 at home against Letchworth, Cuffley and Welwyn, with 2 away matches at Sawbridgeworth and Hertford from December to March. Our MXD squad is Debbie, Anna, Viv, Annabel, Ray, Paul, 2 Steves, Neil, Nick and Malcolm.
?We have 7 Mens Vets Matches to be played. We started off with a 2 : 2 draw against Sarratt in November and have 2 remaining home matches these are against Bovingdon & Flaunden and Hertford There are 4 away matches at Greenwood Park in St. Albans, West Herts in Watford, Totteridge and Croxley Green to be played from December to April. We have a small but select squad consisting of Ray, Dermot, the two Steves and Malcolm.
These matches are played in a competitive and friendly spirit, with prospects of promotion in both leagues.
Junior Match Play:
Steve Hunt has been busy organising match play for some of our Junior players, who have been playing very well and delighted at raising their ratings.
Participants include George Allan, Alex Wells and Finn O’Connor.
This is taken by Steve Hunt, our Head Coach, assisted by Jenny. Coaching continues throughout the year, mainly on our own courts except for the Winter months when it gets dark early and then we are fortunate as we are able to use the courts at Digswell with floodlighting.
TENNIS AT ALL SAINTS SCHOOL:
Jenny Larke does this with the younger children, assisted by myself, and on occasion by Mary Hallam or Judith Butter.
SATURDAY FAMILY SESSION: This is enjoyed throughout the year every Saturday with the exception of this coming Saturday 27th December, when it is envisaged that the majority will still be absorbed with their Christmas gifts. But the courts will be open to any parents wishing to take their children on court.
SOCIAL TENNIS: With new members joining us our numbers have increased, we play Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning. If wishing to play please contact me, new players always welcomed including beginners and returners!
MATCH PLAYERS: Meet every Sunday morning 10.30am and usually one morning in the week.
SUNDAY GUYS: I doubt if there are many, if any Club, that has 6 -8 players playing regularly and appearing on court every Sunday at 8.30 am. throughout the year whatever the weather, only heavy rain seems to keep them at bay – but not even that if play has commenced.
Subject: Pennies from Heaven!
I know I said I / we were collecting old balls but I did not mean literally myself out on the Green doing just that - the idea is to deliver them to me for recycling - that way we get paid for them and the fellows who thought up this scheme also give the money they receive for the balls to Charity. We received £25 for the last 250 balls.
I don’t know who was responsible for showering the Green with tennis balls, 16 in total, but please next time just put them in a bag and place by my front door.
NEW YEARS DAY. I will be watching to see who appears on court!!
In the meanwhile …..
