DATCHWORTH TENNIS CLUB
NEWSLETTER MAY 2014
To DATCHWORTH MAGAZINE, a big “thank you” they have awarded us a grant for £500. It will buy essential equipment for our Junior players. We will also be running taster sessions to various groups over the Summer.
QUIZ NIGHT A second “thank you” to all who supported and to those who helped with the running of our Quiz Night, Wendy, Sandra, Anne L and her friend Sue, Karin – marker and Jan, Quiz master. This proved to be an excellent evening, enjoyed by all. There was fierce competition between the top two tables Neil O’Callaghan’s and Annabel Reilly’s, husbands versus wives, with the men finally winning by 1 point! Only a couple of points behind in third and fourth place Maureen Bodden’s and Mary Hallam’s teams. The money raised, £440, will be used part to subsidise our holiday coaching and taster sessions throughout the coming year and part to our ongoing court maintenance fund.
COURT RESURFACING made possible with the grant received from East Herts District Council. You will have observed the tarmac and edging has been done, these had to be left for 3 weeks for the oils to dry out now we are waiting for a dry period for them to be painted, being a water based paint the weather has to be favourable. Once the painting is completed we will soon have our courts back in full use once again. We have been fortunate in the fact that Watton at Stone has allowed us to use their courts for some early morning play for the Social and Sunday Guys. Malcolm Acres has been able to fix with other local Clubs to have use of their courts for our first few League matches. Steve Hunt has arranged with Tewin to use their courts for his coaching groups. Having since spoken with people who have played with temporary lines we have learnt that for various reasons it was not really recommended.
FRIENDLY JUNIOR MATCHES against Watton, It had been our hope to organise a couple of matches during the Easter holidays, it proved difficult with people away at various times, however we did manage one match. Two of our under 11’s played Watton U12’s [due to a question of availability] There was a very good standard of tennis, some excellent play and long rallies; despite the final score our players did well, games were close with many deuces – but Watton had the edge. Well done Finn and George. It is hoped that further games may be arranged.
