DATCHWORTH TENNIS CLUB
The Holidays are upon us once again – however should you be looking for something to do to entertain the off spring on a Thursday morning we have the answer!
We are running a series of coaching sessions on a Thursday morning for the various age groups – details below – the Club House will be open at 9.45am for registration, there will be a variety of things, badminton racquets, rounders bats etc to entertain younger or older siblings whilst others are on court - afterwards drinks and biscuits.
We have racquets and balls so all that is needed is the players!
You will note that we are holding two “Girls Only” sessions, on the first two Tuesdays of the month, this is in an effort to get more girls, which we seem to be sadly lacking, playing tennis

Saturday Family Tennis 9.30 – 11.00 as usual. Free to all members and non-members
Club Matches, organised by Malcolm Acres, are well under way. On Saturday the 20th July we held the Ladies Singles and the Men’s Doubles Finals. The former was won by Debbie Hall 6-3; 6-1 and the Men’s Doubles by Ray Calderwood and Alan Mitchell 6-3; 3-6; 6-4. Runners up were Steve Elms and Malcolm Acres. There was some excellent tennis played on both courts and all games were closely fought. Jessie Little, the Datchworth Sports Club President, kindly agreed to present the trophies. Afterwards players plus spectators retreated out of the sun to the Club House to enjoyed a “Wimbledon” feast of Strawberries and cream! The Ladies Doubles played earlier in the month was won by Viv Poutney and Anna Pertoldi. The date for the remaining finals still has to be confirmed.
Our two teams in the Datchworth Summer League, battled hard and long throughout their matches, but in vain finishing in 8th place in Division 3B and in 7th place in Division 6A, the latter just being pipped out of 6th place - so after the promotion gained last year it looks as though they maybe relegated next year. However come September it will be all go again in the Datchworth Autumn League.
Do you have anyone in your family or amongst your acquaintances who used to play tennis play Tennis? Or would like to but needs encouragement to have a go? As, at the moment, we have Summer take advantage of the weather and get them out and playing, they can come along as a guest player. All players are welcome to join in our Social mornings, held on a Monday, Wednesday and a Friday morning – whatever their standard of play you will find us a friendly bunch! If you are looking to play in matches do come along on a Sunday morning at 10.30am and introduce yourself to Malcolm.
And for Families Saturday is a good time to meet up with others.
See you on court . . . Fran Attrill
